You’ve just bought the home of your dreams. Closing day is fast approaching and you can’t wait to get your stuff out of storage and into your new house. And then you realize how much stuff you have in storage and you have to figure out how to go about protecting your hardwood floors while moving all of your stuff in. In order to preserve your hardwood floors while moving, you need to take some precautions before the movers get there. There are three simple things that can be done to help protect your hardwood floors while moving:
- Laying Down Floor Runners
- Shoe Protection
- Door Mats
A floor runner should be laid down in all major high traffic areas. They can be purchased at just about any home improvement store like Lowes or Home Depot. One popular floor runner is Ram Board. This generally comes in rolls that are 38″ Wide by 50′ long. Area rugs are also another way of protecting your hardwood floors during your move. Ram Board sometimes come with adhesive edges to keep it down, but in the event it doesn’t have any adhesive, blue painters tape is often used to keep the Ram Board secured on the floor.
Asking your movers to use shoe covers will also be a helpful way of protecting your flooring. If the moving company does not use those, it might be to your advantage to purchase them yourself and provide them to your movers. These shoe covers can also be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot.
Another very important thing to do is to provide door mats both inside and outside of the doors the movers are entering and leaving through. One way hardwood floors are damaged during a move is when movers pick up small rocks in their shoes. By asking movers to use the door mats when entering the house, you will reduce the risk of scratches to your brand new hardwood floors. Finally, be sure to have someone outside the house with a broom to make sure small rocks are swept away to reduce the risk of the movers picking up these small rocks in the first place.
