Tile flooring is often purposefully selected for its easy maintenance. Although it is easy to care for, it is not maintenance free. Following a few simple practices will keep it looking beautiful for years to come. Corlew and Perry is a great resource for help with your tile floor maintenance. Below are some basic practices to assist you in keeping your floors beautiful.
Sweeping or vacuuming tile flooring is an easy way to keep dust and dirt from collecting in the grout. It is also extremely important to do this before damp mopping to avoid soaking dust and dirt into the grout. Damp mopping, or using a damp mop to go over the tile and grout, is essential to keeping tiles clean and grout lines from turning dark. Please note, that you should change the water if it begins to look dirty in order to keep from staining the grout. This will usually give you clean tiles and grout without the use of harsh chemicals. The secret is to do this weekly, so the dust and dirt does not build up.
Be sure to clean up spills immediately. Even if the tiles are sealed and non porous, the grout is not. It will absorb quickly, so act fast by simply wiping up spills. Even water should be a spill that needs attention quickly so it does not mix with dirt on the grout and cause staining. Vinegar, bleach, and ammonia will affect the color of the grout, so avoid these. Area rugs in high traffic areas, such as entryways, can help to reduce dirt stains.
Tile and grout deep cleaning
If your tile and grout have not received weekly maintenance, then a deep cleaning will be required. Take care not to apply harsh chemicals that will affect your grout color as well as break down the seal on your tile flooring. A baking soda and water paste brushed on and left overnight is very effective on cleaning grout. A mild soap and water solution will often clean the tiles without damaging the grout. Travertine tile, and other natural stone, requires a pH neutral cleaner to avoid destroying the seal/glaze on the tile. A suggestion would be 1Tbs of Murphy’s Oil Soap per 2 gallons of water. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry promptly with a towel for a beautiful shine.
